The mobile communications revolution is driving the world’s major technology breakthroughs. From wearable devices to connected cars and homes, mobile technology is at the heart of worldwide innovation. As an industry, it is connecting billions of people to the transformative power of the Internet and mobilising every device we use in our daily lives. Unsurprisingly, Acuity is well involved in the mobile market, having pushed through several deals in this space. Underlining our mobile commitment, we are set to attend the Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona in early March, a combination of the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry and a conference featuring prominent executives representing mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors and content owners from across the world.
Acuity’s activity in the mobile space has been expansive and diverse. In 2011, the company successfully assisted with the management buy-in (MBI) of Redeem Limited. Redeem is an international leader in the recovery and recycling of used mobile phones, print cartridges and other electronic devices. Operating in Europe and Asia, Radeem works with some of the UK’s and Ireland’s largest brands, including network operator O2 and retailers Boots and Sainsbury’s, to offer innovative customer recycling programmes. In 2013, we helped secure international investment for Marmalade, the UK software company that enables developers to build and distribute cross-platform applications quickly and easily. Marmalade’s technology was used for the development and deployment of high profile games such as Final Fantasy, Need for Speed and Resident Evil to mobile devices. In 2014, we also secured the sale of YourWealth.co.uk and its Money Hub app technology to Momentum UK (consisting of Momentum Global Investment Management and MMI Holdings UK) which forms part of MMI Holdings Ltd (MMI), one of the largest financial services groups in South Africa.
Last year’s Mobile World Congress was hosted in Barcelona also, at two world-class venues, Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuïc. More than 85,000 attendees from over 200 countries were treated to a wealth of learning and networking opportunities; product showcases and announcements; inspiration and innovation.
More than 1,800 companies showcased their organisations through exhibition stands and hospitality spaces across nine halls and outdoor spaces at Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuïc. Visiting the exhibition halls provided glimpses of exciting new phones, tablets, wearables, back-end solutions, technologies, applications, accessories, and more.
Between the GSMA Pavilion in the GSMA Connected City, and several initiatives pavilions, the GSMA highlighted important initiatives benefiting the industry, including Mobile Apps, Mobile Cloud, NFC & Mobile Money and Green Technology. More than 32 countries and territories from around the world showcased innovative companies and ideas from their citizens.
The 2015 GSMA Mobile World Congress will convene industry leaders, visionaries and innovators to explore the trends that will shape mobile in the years ahead. Acuity is happy to be part of this global movement and will have a strong presence on the ground to meet the people who will shape the industry in the future.
